They, being the people who run the Oakland, California “Measure Y” violence reduction program, and specifically the ‘he’ being Joe DeVries, the coordinator.

Some of the toughest and “urban” areas of Oakland, Sobrante Park and DeFremery Park, will be the target of the latest round of gun buybacks. Inner city kids and adults are encouraged to exchange their firearms for tickets to…

Get this…

The December 15th Oracle Park “Guns-n-Roses” concert.

Yes. Guns-n-Roses. To quote from the article, “Guns N’ Roses — the band?” asked Mike Magardo, a 34-year-old Oakland resident. “I think that’s a little off the mark. In general, the folks who would show up for a gun exchange in those neighborhoods either don’t know or care who Guns N’ Roses are.”

The biggest problem with the promotion is that if legions of inner city kids were to take the offer, the result could incite much more violence rather than it would abate it if the band plays some of its greatest hits.

Such as “One in a Million,” released during the band’s heyday in 1988, Rose sings: “Police and n — , that’s right, get out of my way. Don’t need to buy none of your Goldchains today.”

Chip Johnson still gets it wrong when he says gun buy back programs are a good idea, but at least he recognizes an even worse idea embedded in that bad idea.

*****UPDATE***** *****UPDATE***** *****UPDATE*****

I have an update to this story. It seems that Joe DeVries is very active in Oakland politics and takes up many causes to champion.

But one of his causes kind of confuses me, especially in light of his current project to get guns off the streets is his campaign to get drugs ONTO the streets.

I am not sure the message being sent here. But I bet it is not a good one.
