If you are like me, and have been moaning and groaning about Microsoft not releasing Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, you probably downloaded and tried RC2 Refresh. And if you are not like me, it probably installed a-okay. But if you did have a problem, this is the one I had and maybe you did as well.

A BSOD flashes on the screen just at the end of the install and when Windows tries to restart it appears again. And again. And again. I finally got it to stay on the screen long enough to get this text:

STOP ERROR 0xc0000139 Ending Point Not Found
Gdigetbitmapbitsize not loaded in dynamic link library GDI32.DLL

FUN! But don’t fret, there is an easy fix. Using either your Windows Install CD or Bart-PE you can get the problem taken care of.

In either case (Windows Install CD or Bart-PE) you need to copy one file. Here are the steps I used to get the GDI32.DLL back to working order.

  • Once in a CMD screen switch to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ and rename GDI32.DLL to GDI32.DLL.OLD
  • And then COPY C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\GDI32.DLL GDI32.DLL
  • Reboot

And there you have it. The problem is that the old GDI32.DLL file was not allowed to be replaced with the new one. Once you get it replaced everything should work fine.

I am on a business trip with a Pavilion zv5000 Intel P-4 with 2 gig of Ram and an hdd that is only 20% full. I have been running with a Verizon pcmcia dsl wireless card 5750. IE7, XP-Sp2, with auto updates enabled. I have been running flawlessly for months now. Then in a bored moment in a motel, I loaded SP3-RC2. Everything went fine downloading, no checksum or errors of any kind. Then a message all was well, running cleanup. Then the ubiquitous “must re-boot to complete install” OK so far, then I get my power-up password MSG. I entered it and waited, and waited, then another power-up password request, now I know I have trouble. Did the F8 interrupt and could not get into safe mode of any ilk. Finally got a MSG. C0000139 MSG. no entry point into GDI32.dll. Called MS then the fiasco really begins, transfered to Pakistan or Bangladesh. Unable to understand 3 of them, they insisted it must be hardware as SP3 is running with no problems. Conversation went from inane to stupid. Dropped calls 3 times each time getting another, seemingly more dumb “tech”each time. The story is to long to post in this venue, but suffice it to say I was on hold or in repeat mode much longer than in “help” mode. If this is the harbinger of support from MS, Linux here I come. As a long time MS apologist, I am finished with MS. This is being typed on the same “broken” hardware, that has been rebuilt back to XP SP2 and IE7. I just lost tons of customer data, both raw, coded and even some compiled. Bill Gates should either sell out his part of MS or get back to running his company. Every release of software is a disaster. So long Mr. Gates and the Bangladesh circus. It is blatantly obvious to anyone that MS cares only about the bottom line, not the phone line.

The previous comment was about MS lack of competent support.

You could change the problem to anything requireing MS phone support.

MS Phone support is always my last resort. Sometimes it takes a while but I was able to google the answer for this one in just a few minutes. But when there are no other computers working to query google is when the MS Fone-Fun begins :(

BTW. You can use just about any live CD to do this repair. I happened to have a live Fedora 8 CD laying around, and it worked perfectly. Although, I found it strange the time stamp on the broken DLL was newer than the time stamp on the service pack DLL.

I wonder if there are any other libraries that didn’t install.
